Referral from GP

For Breast Symptoms

Patients will have all their personal details checked. A surgeon or nurse practitioner will see you initially and take a brief, relevant history and perform a clinical examination of the breast. Should any other examinations be required e.g. mammograms or an ultrasound these will be performed during the visit.

If other tests are taken patients may be asked to come back in a few days for the results.

For Evaluation of Family History Risk

If patients believe they have an increased risk due to breast cancer in the family this will be discussed during your appointment. Individual risk will be established by the specialist team.

In many cases it will be demonstrated that there is no additional risk. In some cases risk may be slightly increased and regular mammography may be required. In a very few cases a significant risk is established and appropriate advice will be provided.

Attending Results Clinic

Results clinics are held three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

During the clinic the results of any tests will be made available. These may include X-rays, ultrasound, a biopsy or blood tests.

Patients attending usually find it helpful to bring someone with them with whom to discuss any information given. Sometimes these appointments last a long time and patients should be prepared to be in clinic for up to two hours though this may be a lot shorter.

All patients will meet a consultant breast surgeon who will discuss the results and answer any questions. Breast Care Nurses are also present in Results clinic.
